And That Reminds Me

We can’t be sure what the cause is, but the “word association game” play has been getting out of control lately.  It’s not the ordinary (and rather stupid) substitution that seems acceptable.  Things like       thinking the evil empire might have tried to hide the magical meaning in FRED instead of FREDERICK or it’s not PIZZA, but instead DEEP DISH PIZZA because that was in the news headline.  No, this is the bizarre word association that the truly clueless use for personal synchronicity.  Just completely out of the blue (or is that cerulean?) somebody takes a stab at what a news item reminds them of.  Just in case somebody else didn’t notice, because once the evil empire has been decoded then...they’ll move on to what the next word reminds them of.  That’ll teach those vile bastards a lesson.

They’re easy to spot.  No disguises here, the commenter tells you outright by preceding the meat of the comment with, “that reminds me of...” or some variation.  “Like” is a favorite, because it’s short and sweet.  “Charles Lazarus.  Like Lazarus in the Bible!!”  Yes, congratulations.  Even this non biblical scholar knows that one and the first thing that came to my mind, too.  You win a cookie.  Or we can maybe guess that your use of the word “like” is supposed to remind people to “like” your comment and click on the Google +1 version of YouTube 👍 or Facebook likes.  These are a waste of time because everyone knows them.

The next variation is something that raises the bar of nearly infinitely powered super beings up to just below the level of invading Dan’s dreams.  “When I think of Heath Ledger, I think of The Patriot.”  Which translates to “I was thinking of Gabriel because of confirmation bias, and now I remember he was Gabriel in Patriot and that’s the number I was looking for.”  I would argue that The Joker is the role most people remember him for.  But, let’s give some credit to others tastes.

Even if we just limit the number of really cool Heath roles* to six instead of every movie he’s been in how in the hell is the evil empire supposed to know which movie was coded for which person?  Congratulations, you just cheapened the message by pointing towards infinite variations on how to word something.  The evil empire is out to get US** because you think Brokeback Mountain is Heath’s best movie and you’re wrong!  Subtle and unintentional psychological projection.

And it gets worse, far, far worse.  Austin bombing rhymes with Boston bombing.  There are more people in big cities, so bfd.  I found Google search matches for Coston, Dotson and Foston before I got bored with the project.  And don’t forget diphthongs*** like Croston.  Or how -ten, -tin, -ton and -tyn sound close to the same.

If you can’t understand that this leads to nearly infinite interpretations then you’re never going to understand why gematria doesn’t work.  It’s like the South Park episode where the scientist rambles on about the first word that pops into his head after mentioning one word.  (Earth cancelled?)  Even though the gematria version stops at one “reminds me of” since I have seen a number spelled out and then changed directly into a third number by spelling that out who knows?

* That reminds me of Heathrow apart.
** Like U.S.  The United States.  Does that mean Sweden is safe?
*** Like bikinis or underwear.  Cool.  Or hot.  That could remind someone of either.
**** Although I might suggest that moneypenny could be “punny many” like lots of jokes, the first thing that I thought of about Derek Jeter was it sounds like Derek Cheater which is vastly more appropriate here.
