It comes as no surprise that the suicide of Aaron Hernandez gets a mention in Mindless Freaks. Combine the statistical source materials of football and the Bible we have lots of two or three digit numbers to play games with.
Let’s nitpick on two points first. Dan reports that Fernandez had written John 3:16 in blood on his forehead. That being the Bible verse about God so loving ...only begotten son. One of the best known verses frequently seen on camera at ball games. I see no need to embellish the story about it being written in blood. It was red magic marker.
And he makes a note about one number "maybe being a stretch" but throws it out there anyway. Maybe this one is a stretch? As opposed to what is not being a stretch? Like turning 23,801 into 2,381, into 353, into 53 isn't a stretch?
Which is a great lead in for the 3:16 football game. Here we have a perfect mixture for some truly remarkable numbers. A playoff game with some significance. Tim Tebow notoriously religious. And he throws for 316 yards in the Denver win. Threw 10 completions average 31.6 yards. Roethlisberger's only interception was on 3rd down and 16. Pittsburgh time of possession 31 minutes 6 seconds.
Yes all very cool and quite interesting. And real. Of course the conspiracy crowd wants you to think it was all scripted, disregarding how many things do not equal 316. Tebow's sub par completion percentage of less than 50% isn't miraculous. 20 for 20 for 316 yards would have been way cooler. The Denver D, not Tebow, is the reason for the Steelers time of possession. The score wasn't 31-6.
Media reports mostly just left it at that. There is some indication that after some obvious 316s they searched for the others and exhausted all possible sources. Then moved on.
But in the Hall of Fame in Gematraville the game lives forever. And as if those numbers now validate all future numbers anything related to it also MUST be cool by association. Hernandez played together with Tebow and he had 3:16 on his forehead and wall. But that's not good enough, so now we're going to drag in everything we can find.
By pulling numbers out our ass changing them in what appears to be less and less subtle ways all the time.
